This is one of the most interesting and complicated situations in the NBA right now. The Chris Paul and Phoenix Suns situation. The Suns, just in the last 6 months, got new ownership, fired Monty Willams and hired Frank Vogel, and traded for Kevin Durant. Now, they are deciding on Chris Paul’s future. Chris Paul was waived.
The Suns’ decision to waive Paul comes on the heels of the 38-year-old point guard’s least productive seasons as a professional. In 59 regular season games, Paul registered career lows in points, endured one of the worst shooting seasons of his career, was slowed by multiple injuries, and lacked the explosion or quick first step to finish in the paint.
Paul was due to earn $30.8 million next season, but was only owed $15.8 million if waived by the June 28 deadline. Instead of trading Paul, it appears the Suns decided to allow Paul the decision to choose his destination for the 2023-24 season on the open market as a free agent.
Now, there are some conflicting reports, there is a chance the Suns might try to bring back Chris Paul at a lower cost after clearing waivers. Some sources might even say a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers or other teams is possible.
Sources: The Suns and Chris Paul are exploring multiple options, including a trade, stretching his contract, or waiving and re-signing him in free agency. Phoenix expected to discuss trades ahead of Paul’s June 28 contract date.
