I’ve Changed My Mind: Mariners Need To Pick Up Kyle Seager’s Option

Mariners Might Need To Keep Kyle Seager

Kyle Seager has been a staple for the Seattle Mariners for the last 10 years straight, and it has been quite the ride. Although, if you know me, whether you are my friend, or know me on Twitter, I have been a hater. Sometimes rightfully so, sometimes not. But I will keep this simple. I never loved the 7 year, $100 million dollar contract. While Seager has been good, the right answer it more like slightly above average, always around .250 with 25 HRs. This year has been different though, while the average has gone down to .214, the career-best 33 home runs is a good sight to see.

Now, here’s the deal. Seager has been coming up with big HRs or hits when the Mariners need them. His splits recently have been awful despite feeling like he’s playing really good baseball. But that doesn’t matter for THIS team.

Kyle Seager Splits

Yet, this team loves him, this city loves him, and the young core NEEDS him. We are 12 games above .500 and still won’t likely make the postseason. But nights like last night against the Diamondbacks, with 2 HRs and helping us win 4 straight is why we need him for 1 more year.

Mariners do have a club option they can exercise to extend him through the 2022 season for $15 million. Or, they could offer him a multi-year extension. I think the clear answer is, give it one more ride. Next year, if we keep this up, we should be competing for a playoff spot early, and having one long tenured vet, really really, makes a big difference. I am sorry for my past Seager slander, let’s run it back.
