If there’s one thing we know, it’s that sports come in all shapes and sizes. There are team sports, individual sports, water sports, athletic sports, and a whole host besides. However, it looks like winter sports are quickly rising in popularity and due to become the next big thing, both for observers and casual participants. The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018 was the first to really capture the public’s imagination, and the demand for skiing holidays and excursions has kept on rising. But why are winter sports such good fun, and what do you need to get involved?
The locations are stunning
What do you need in order to do any winter sport, from skiing to snowboarding to ice-skating? Snow and ice, of course! And mountains don’t hurt, either. By improving your skiing skills, you’re opening up a massive set of opportunities to travel to some of the most beautiful places on the planet, experiencing stunning views and, with cross-country skiing, areas of incredible wilderness. Snowsports definitely have this advantage over, say, soccer, or any other sport that needs an organized pitch on which to play.
When it comes to watching sports, you might not pick snowboarding as your first choice. However, once you’ve started you’ll find it incredibly hard to stop – watching people hurtle down hills and do fantastically dangerous and impressive flips into the air on a snowboard is an exciting prospect. The drama of winter sports has great potential, and you’ll soon find yourself itching to give it a go yourself (though jumps and tricks are not recommended for beginners)!
The whole family can get involved
There’s a reason why winter sports holidays have become so popular – they’re perfect for the whole family. Skiing is a great way for parents to keep active and enjoy themselves whilst their kids are occupied on the little slopes. And of course, it isn’t just a family activity anyway, but one that any active person will enjoy. If you’re a sport-lover, this is time away much better spent than lounging on the beach and drinking cocktails all day. Get the wind in your hair and the snow on your cheeks, and you’ll soon fall in love with winter sports as much as everyone else.
What do you need?
Most places where you can ski or snowboard will provide you with basic equipment, however, if you really want to take your adventures seriously, you’ll need to stock up. Make sure to get the best snowboarding hydration pack so you can ensure you keep hydrated when out on the slopes – as any sportsperson knows, your fluid intake is incredibly important whilst you’re being active, and in cold temperatures, this can be easy to forget. Speaking of which, you’ll also need to make sure you’re fully prepared with insulated clothing and gear. If you’re particularly intrepid and adventuring out in the wilds with cross-country skiing, survival gear is essential so that you’re prepared for every scenario. After all, part of the fun of winter sports comes from the adrenaline!
