This didn’t seem like it would be possible, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2020 NBA MVP race. For Giannis, this isn’t very shocking though, he’s only 25 years old, coming off his first MVP last season. He is the front runner in being one of the many back-to-back MVPs in the last 40 years:
NBA back-to-back MVP winners (since 1980):
Moses: '81-82, '82-83
Bird: '83-84, '84-85, '85-86
Magic: '88-89, '89-90
Jordan: '90-91, '91-92
Duncan: '01-02, '02-03
Nash: '04-05, '05-06
LeBron: '08-09, '09-10 & '11-12, '12-13
Steph: '14-15, '15-16

For LeBron though, this is a storybook season. In his second year as a Los Angeles Laker, he is in year 17 and 35 years old… But somehow he keeps on making magic happen as the Lakers sit atop the Western Conference. LeBron is going after his 5th NBA MVP:

Milwaukee (53-9) currently sits atop the East and the NBA, while the Lakers (47-13) hold the top spot in the West. Luckily for us, the Friday night showdown is happening between the two, which can play a role in the MVP race.
Giannis currently sits at an overwhelming favorite (-700) in the MVP odds, but LeBron is creepy around (+775). Giannis has a edge on the defensive end this year, but as you can see LeBron is leading the league in assists and will continue to make his case for the MVP.
